From rubbish tossed off boats to litter that washes in from land, it all takes a toll on marine life. That’s why these clean-up dives matter so much. But the real change starts on land: recycle whenever possible, and encourage your friends and family to bin their waste properly—whether they’re in town, on the beach, or out at sea.
To brighten our day, while clearing marine debris, we were joined by a school of Blue Sea Chub (Kyphosus cinerascens), a beautiful reminder of why protecting these ecosystems matters. 💙🐟

Seagrass are often referred to as the lungs pf the ocean, producing oxygen, absorbing carbon, and providing shelter for countless marine creatures! Despite covering only 0.1% of the ocean floor, they store up to 18% of the ocean’s carbon, making them vital in the fight against climate change.
In Mauritius, they play a crucial role in protecting our coasts, supporting fisheries, and sheltering marine life, from vibrant fish to elusive invertebrates. Mauritius is home to Syringodium, Halophila, and Thalassia species, which act as nurseries for fish, crustaceans, and sea turtles while stabilizing the seabed against erosion.
However, seagrass are under threat, with factors such as pollution, coastal development, and climate change causing seagrass meadows to disappear at an alarming rate. You can help by:
👉 Reducing plastic pollution by avoiding single use plastic and recycling ♻️
👉 Supporting marine conservation projects like Reef Gardeners, @ecosud_mauritius and others 🪸
👉 Spread awareness – share this post & educate others! 📢
Let’s work together to protect and restore these blue carbon heroes for future generations! 🌎

The kids learned about marine life, fish and coral conservation, and how we can restore reefs by building coral nurseries. They also discovered the impact of coral bleaching and, through art, brought corals back to life—painting them in vibrant colors before "planting" them on our coral nursery. Every small action counts, and together, we’re making a difference for our oceans! If you'd like to book our Paint Your World activity for your little ones, get in touch! 💙🐠🌱
Together we're changing the way we see and do restoration, one mind at a time! 🪸

A beautiful school of Convict tangs is among the many fish species you can encounter in the lagoons and shallow reefs surrounding Mauritius. These fish, like many other reef fish, play a vital role in maintaining the health of coral ecosystems. These fish are herbivores, primarily feeding on algae that grow on and around coral. By grazing on these algae, they help prevent overgrowth, which can smother corals and limit their access to sunlight.
This balance is crucial for the resilience of coral reefs, as healthy corals can better withstand stressors like climate change and pollution.

Two juvenile blue tang seek refuge among this Cauliflower coral to evade predators. The complex architecture of coral provides hiding spots where they can stay concealed and protected.
This relationship highlights the importance of healthy coral reefs in supporting the survival of marine life.

From the age of 16, he was involved in the marine aquarium trade and developed a fascination for corals. As he grew older, this fascination developed into a passion for growing and selling coral rather than encouraging wild coral harvesting and trade.
After moving to Mauritius from a cold, Atlantic Ocean Cape Town, he was excited to be more actively involved in reef related activities. After exploring local reefs and seeing how devestated local populations were, he felt determined to make a difference.
So, staring out into the sunset one evening in Grand Gaube, he came up with the Reef Gardeners project. A concept where reef restoration came together with stakeholder integration, being both propelled and sustained by the private sector, in coordination with local governance. A project that no longer relied on grants for its continued operation but one that could become entirely self sustainable.
Stay tuned to see this project unfold and meet some of our early adopters, committed to creating a difference in the way the world experiences our reefs 🤿

Born and raised in Mauritius, Kenny’s family were keen fisherman. As such, he spent a lot of time out on the water, dreaming of one day exploring the world underwater.
Pursuing this dream, he built a career for himself in diving. It was through this that he developed a love for the underwater world and sharing this with those around him.
Kenny has now worked his way to PADI Master instructor, and is the proud owner of Indigo Divers, offering scuba diving activities at the One&Only Le Saint Géran Hotel.
Passionate about conservation and raising awareness, Kenny wanted to do more, so he joined forces with us to found Reef Gardeners 🪸

After moving to Mauritius and making it home, she fell in love with the underwater world that our unique island had to offer. Her passion soon evolved and she decided to capture this new found world and bring it to your screens.
Sadly, the more she explored the more she found that many of the local reefs in and around Mauritius were dying and she was inspired to do more. If you follow her channel (@sea.sand.freckles) you’ll see that Ashley is a firm advocate for preservation and conservation.
So, when the Reef Gardeners project was founded, there was no doubt that she was the right person to capture every moment and every milestone, and bring it to your screens 🪸
